Sewing transparencies - tips from Shimelle Laine

If you enjoyed Shimelle Laine's transparent mini book in the November issue, you may want to try one yourself. Here are some extra tips from Shimelle to help with the construction, plus a couple of pictures that we couldn't fit in the magazine:

Sewing the transparent acetate can be a bit tricky, so make sure you have a spare sheet or two to allow for practice! To sew on your machine, start with a sharp, new needle and a longer stitch length than you would use on fabric. Make a test strip with two layers of transparency and see how your stitch looks. Transparencies are less forgiving than paper, so you may need to adjust the tension if the stitches appear to be too loose or too tight on your test strip. Once you complete your book, replace your needle. Some transparencies become quite sharp and can blunt or splinter your needle – trust me, the stress isn't worth it when you next go to sew on fabric and your needle is clumsy or about to break! If you prefer to sew by hand, select a strong thread and punch holes in both layers of the transparency with a paper piercer. Just use a ruler for even stitches or punch the holes unaided for a more random look. Once you have your pages punched, you're ready to relax and sew everything into place. Take the time to make your knots pretty – with transparent sheets, there's no place to hide the end of the thread.
